I recently had the
opportunity to meet Christopher Noxon, author of
Rejuvenile -
you may have seen him on the
Colbert Report. His book is a great airplane read – or better yet,
read it under the covers with your favorite flashlight.
Chances
are, if the flashlight idea appeals to you, you may be a rejuvenile.
I spend
so much time learning about today’s youth that I have often blamed my
nutty behavior on my job – I mean I have to play, er um,
work on social networking sites. I have to make movies and
post them on YouTube. It’s essential that I get the newest
iPod because my teens are buying the same thing.
But now
that I have met Christopher and read his book, I think there’s something
more pathological going on. It’s likely I could have saved a lot of
money spent on therapy had I only known what Christopher has identified:
a “world of people who see growing up as a ‘winding down’ – exchanging a
life of playful flexibility for anxious days tending lawns and mutual
funds.” Grab a copy of his
book to learn more about these fun-loving adults.
So why is this important?
Because
it means the youth market doesn’t stop at youth! I have long resisted
studying the “adult” market because let’s face it, who needs to hear
another
BlackBerry “use” study. Booorrriiinnngggg.
But if I
can study the rejuveniles, the adults who are using today’s youthful
tools and technology and incorporating them into their lives, now I have
a group of people who are interesting! And I can’t help but think that
these rejuveniles are having a positive impact on business as they more
readily adapt to the younger generations coming on board and pushing us
all to try new things and think differently.
So are you a rejuvenile?
I guess
that’s up to you to decide. Have you been to
family camp? (That's Jen, her mom and daughter at family camp in the
photo on the left.) When’s the last time you had your face painted? Do you still
play with Lego, Transformers, or are you testing recipes in your Easy
Bake Oven? These are just a few of the tell tale traits of a rejuvenile.
If you
have a great photo of you in all your rejuvenile glory,
post
it here! Or are you too grown up to take the challenge?
